05:23 pm - [Otakon] Travel arrangements Okay, Animania is a go... again. So roomies and I can hammer out last minute plans on the 12th.
Which is good, because of another minor wrench thrown into the system:
I'm working the Wednesday before on 2nd, which means I won't be home until 11 pm. If I crash in Raleigh, I won't be there until midnight at the earliest.
I think the easiest thing would be to have those that are riding with me to come to the house as usual. I'll meet everyone there and we'll get up on Thursday morning to head to Baltimore. Current Mood: annoyed

12:22 am - Sounds right.
Your result for What Kind Of Gamer Are You?...
FCPE - Role Playing Gamer
In stark contrast to the Action Gamer (TSAD) is the Role Player. FCPE's lack the reflexes or twitchy demeanor, but they excel in other areas. They handle complex menus, maps, and concepts very well, and they utilize them in extremely effective ways. Strategy is the name of the game for FCPE's. They're not looking for a quick fix of rapid violence, they prefer to exploit a weakness, find a key, or unlock a new path. For Role Players, the game itself is as enjoyable as actually playing it. Games FCPE's like: Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy, Lost Odyssey, Pokémon
FLUID You have very subtle, smooth movements. Your muscles stay relaxed, even in tense situations. This makes you ideal for games where you have to perform precise movements under pressure such as shooters and racing games. Your thumbs glide over the controller and you are probably one the better shots on your team in Call of Duty or even can do fairly well in a racing game you've never played because you don't make the car spin out of control. But you also don't do as well with games that require a faster touch. Most hardcore action games and fighting games will give you a hard time because the other players can input the moves a lot faster than you can. And you probably can't tap the button fast enough to blow up your balloon in Mario Party.
COMPLEX The more the better is your motto. You want your games to be a nuanced and varied as you are. You don't mind shuffling through an extra menu or two or learning a couple more combos. If it will add depth to the game and give you more freedom, bring it on! You've probably debated on more than one occasion why can't Pokemon have more than four moves at a time. Or you've committed yourself to learning Zangeif's entire moveset, just to be that much better for the next match. You enjoy managing money, stats and equipment, making your team or army or city bigger, better, and badder. And you're always looking for a new way to complete a task. You also tend to lose interest or generally have trouble with simpler games, as you become frustrated or confused by the lack of things in your control.
PLANNING When it comes to the actual act of playing, you're a no-frills flawless machine. It's a good thing that video game characters don't actually carry all the stuff in your inventory, because they'd probably suffocate underneath it all! You've got your armies all highly trained and equipped with rocket launchers and jeeps with gatling guns. You didn't even have to be in the same room as your PS2 to finish the final boss of Final Fantasy XII. You're prepared for anything because you've got it all figured out ahead of time. But even the best plans backfire sometimes and that's where your weakness shines through. You're so used to having enough healing potions that when you actually run out you're a sitting duck.
ENTERTAINMENT You play mostly for the fun of the game. Whether its the story, the gameplay, or just the overall feel of the game, something about it draws you in. You'll find yourself popping a game in years after you completed it to revisit the characters, locales, and gameplay. You probably own at least a few game soundtracks and maybe a few posters. You appreciate games as art and a way to pass the time. You may also play competitively (either professionally or amateur) but that's not the reason you'll be playing them 40 years from now. 07:35 pm - Obligatory blog about Michael Jackson There are currently three types of people in the pop world right now.
1 - Those that choose to remember the King of Pop with nostalgia and fondness. 2 - Those that choose to remember a creepy man-child with an addiction to plastic surgery and boundary issues concerning children. 3 - Those that can resolve both images in their minds.
I'm in the third category.
Jackson made incredible contributions to the music industry. But the minute he revealed his singing talents, he was not allowed to be a child. He grew up before protections for child entertainers existed and was forced by both his manager father and his fans to grow up on the stage.
How can you expect someone to become a well-adjusted adult when he was constantly pressured to be perfect? When he was never allowed to make a misstep or a mistake? When he had to watch other kids go out to play on the playground on this way to the studio for a 10-hour recording session? When he had girls throwing themselves at him before he quite knew what to do with them? When he was forced to watch his father's and older brothers' skirt-chasing? When he had to have a full entourage of bodyguards to usher him around so he wouldn't get literally ripped apart by his adoring fans?
Yet, he was still able to go on-stage with a smile. To entertain without complaint. To give an audience their thrill for the evening. He was able to crank out new songs and re-invent the music industry as we knew it.
But he could only keep it up for so long. So it's unsurprising that he self-destructed in his later years with the surgeries, suspected molestation, and just plain being eccentric. And the American media was all too eager to rip him to shreds just like his father did for every misstep and faux pas.
Was he a pop hero? Or a pedophilic villian? Both?
Or maybe a tragic figure whose only true crime was proving that he was only human and subject to the same flaws and foibles as everyone else?
Maybe that was Jackson's most terrible secret of all: The King really wasn't wearing any clothes.
Rest in peace, Michael. No matter the reason, you deserve it. Current Mood: contemplative

01:18 am - [Katsucon] Room reserved! aka Thank you Marriott and AAA! After crunching the numbers, I found that a room at the Gaylord is going to be $600 ($169/night) for the whole weekend, not counting parking, meals and other incidentals. There's also a required additional $15/day resort fee, which they will not waive.
While I can justify that expense for Otakon, being in downtown Baltimore and the opportunity to network with 22,000 potential clients, I can't do that for a convention that's roughly the size of Animazement.
Not to worry, kids! I did some research and found an affordable room at the Residence Inn right next door! It's part of the Marriott chain, so rewards points for me. It includes a king and sofa bed, complimentary breakfast, evening reception, wi-fi, and full in-room kitchen! We're talking stove, oven, microwave and full-sized fridge! All for the AAA rate of $141/night!

02:21 am - [Hero's Con] Report!

Picture Count: 37 FAILs Bagged: 0 Failed FAILs: 2 Plushies Bought: 2 Panhandlers Encountered: 3 Picture Requests: Over 9,000~! Marraige Proposals: 2
Swag:
Large Orochimaru plushie, with tongue and snake sticking out Small Orochimaru plushie, seated Akatsuki robe Joker fanart Copy of Coraline, signed by Neil Gaiman Chris' con present
Day 1:
The first day was largely uneventful. A few last-second errands and delays getting on the highway had me arriving at the hotel at 1 pm. After getting checked in and situated, I put on Silk Spectre II and headed to the con. The day was pretty chill, characterized by chatting with old friends and meeting new people. I trudged around in my hooker heels and surveyed the wares available, scoring two Orochimaru plushies and an Akatsuki robe for an upcoming project. I pretty much blew my allotted $100, but considering that I got two ultra-rare plushies and a high-quality cosplay item that usually sells for $60 - 70 at anime cons -- all for $60 total -- I think I came out ahead.
During my wanderings, I was pulled behind an artist's booth and asked to pose for a few pictures. Other than that, the costume went largely unnoticed, except a few compliments about my legs and how awesome my shoes look. I guess it's either because the Watchmen fans will be in tomorrow or the majority of con-goers only saw the movie, so they only recognize the more slutted-up latex-and-corset version.
Now, I have some new binkies to cuddle with and warm robe to curl up in. Time to work on commissions!
Day 2:
I started the day with a fairly decent breakfast, chilled a little longer in the room and then got on Rainbow Brite for the "big" day of the con. Getting two picture requests as soon as I stepped out of the hotel characterized the day. As I walked into the convention proper, I was stopped for pictures no less than five times right at the door. The day was more or less a blur of wandering around looking at merchandise, getting squeed over and posing for pictures. Women of all ages wanted pictures and hugs with me and husbands/boyfriends took pictures of me for their better halves. Even a few kids recognized me and took pictures with me. Funnily enough, I had full-grown men fanboying over me and asking for pictures as well.
... And two marraige proposals. Sorry, boys! This geek is taken!
During my wanderings, I remember Chris mentioning a web comic that he liked during the previous night's phone call and that the creators were there, so I looked for a giant cactus plushie and bought him one of their prints and had them sign it for his con present. (The name of the comic escapes me ATM.)
I took a smoothie break around 1 and a full-on retreat around 3 to recharge my mental batteries and protein up. After a brief nap-let, I returned to the con to wander until closing. I showered and went in search of food, landing at a pretty good Tex/Mex place. Now I'm chilling in the room and making the most of my $10 wi-fi to check my Email and catch up a bit.
Day 3:
I stayed up a little later than intended to finish the hardest parts of the Bondage-card straps, so the morning started with me hitting the snooze button about 20 times and cursing myself. I finally dragged myself out of bed around 10:30 am to Harley up for the last day of the con.
The scars proved to be temperamental (probably time to throw them out and make some new ones), so the make-up took a little longer than normal. After I got most of the major stuff on, I grabbed the last of my non-essentials to throw into the car. I ran back upstairs to get the rest of my Harley gear on and went to the con. It was pretty chill on the third day and I was recognized pretty readily. I didn't get nearly the amount of picture requests that Rainbow Brite did, but that's because a lot of people have already seen the costume at other cons. However, I made one Joker's day by doing it and brightened up quite a few kids.
It's amazing how many little girls readily take to the Clown Princess of Crime. I don't know if I should feel flattered or very, very disturbed that they love the "clown girl".
While wandering, I picked up a really nice Joker fan art that gives Mistah J the bishie treatment and supported the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund by buying a
The make-up was starting to itch around 3 pm and I was getting a little tired, so I decided to cut out early and head home. Since I no longer had a room to hide in and scrub off the make-up, I used a convenient bathroom sink to do the job. (And felt a little bad because the janitor had just cleaned it! But I cleaned up my mess because I'm a good girl!) I changed into street clothes, stowed Harley away and headed home to give the hubby stories and his con present, which he loved.
Final Notes:
The picture count was a little low, since there was a decided lack of costumes and I got stopped for pictures so often as Rainbow Brite on Saturday. I'm still amazed at how popular the costume is, mostly because I just did it on a whim. I made up 200 candy bags and nearly gave them all out! Considering I usually only bring about 100 business cards to this con, that's saying something!
Holy panhandlers, Batman! I was approached three times this weekend by people asking for money. One claimed to be diabetic, one claimed to need cab fare to get home from the con, and the last one was just "hungry". I believe it was because I was a small woman by herself, so they felt they could approach me and I would give them something either out of kindness or intimidation.
However, I've volunteered at a homeless shelter before, so I've known people that are truly down on their luck. If you really are hungry, I'll be happy to buy you some dinner or give you the address to a shelter, but I'm not giving you my money. I'm considering this a taste of what we'll be dealing with at Otakon, since there will be panhandlers there.
I also retract my statement in the guidelines about there being few eating places in downtown Charlotte. On Friday, I walked about three blocks and found a nice open air mall that had a bunch of eateries and and a very good Tex-Mex place beside Fuel on Saturday. (And I love my Tex-Mex!)
All in all, it was a very enjoyable shopping bazaar of a con. I re-connected with old friends and made new ones. I got squeed over and generated more fans and interest in my costuming business.
I would have enjoyed it more if all my roommates hadn't backed out on me, but I can understand the reasons. (Though I'm still pouting.) I enjoy spending time with them and they provide a distraction for my easily bored mind. Eating the entire $300 for my hotel kinda hurt, too, but I'm getting more commissions and one of Chris's debts is going away next month, so I should recover.
If I'm in this situation again, I'll probably only go the one day. (Anime cons generally don't have this problem because I'm well-known enough in the cosplay community to find replacements relatively quickly.)
Until next month, kids! Otakon, ho! Current Mood: dorky

03:50 am - Bondage-card progress

Well, the hard part's done at least. But there's still a lot of work to be done before it's ready for Otakon.
I like the base jacket so much that I didn't want to permanently alter it. So I came up with the solution of making a "strap overshirt" to slip over the jacket and cut up a pair of leather pants that are too small for me for the straps. I got a set of denim needles to go through the two or three layers of leather, put the jacket on my dressform and added straps. The hard part was keeping the pins in place as I took the overshirt off the dressform and stitched the straps in place.
I haven't added the Velcro to the attachment points yet, so it's pinned in place for the test picture. The straps move a little too much for my liking, so I'm probably going to add a couple more to the sides and/or add clips to attach to the zipper pulls on the front and pockets.
I still need to make loose straps for my arms and add the buttons. I found the perfect ones at Hobby Lobby, but they didn't have the quantities I needed, so I'll probably order them online when I get home.
I also need to resize my gloves, which are WAY too big. One size fits all my ass. But, once it's done and all together, it should look pretty awesome! Current Mood: awake

02:16 am - Up! Review It's a really good movie and, if not a tear-jerker, at least one that will get you misty.
The sweetest moment is: During the more heart-breaking moments of Carl and Ellie's life together (particularly the part with the baby* and hospital), Chris reached over to hold my hand and squeezed it as hard as he dared. It's one of those moments that make me go BAW and want to file away to curl up with later.

02:13 am - [Otakon] Travel arrangements Since Otakon is just a little over a month away (and my attendance at Animania is looking doubtful at this point, since the other 2nd shift guy has already requested that day off*), now's a good time to hammer out travel arrangements.
I've had several people not rooming with me ask if they can hitch a ride in my car, so I need to know which of my roommates are riding with me so I'll know if I can accommodate any extras.
So far, the current NC roommates are:
- Me
- Sam
- Ash
- Sandy
- Eric
- Bucky
Bucky said he can drive himself and Sandy mentioned taking the train since she has bulky-ish armor to transport. So comment here or contact me through the usual means so we can figure out who is riding with whom and where the usual Wednesday night crash is going to be. (Given that everyone else is in Raleigh, I can crash with one of the girls. Unless everyone prefers to crashing at my house.)

09:28 pm - [Hero's Con] Still need roommates The con is two weeks from now and everyone that has expressed interest in rooming with me are either saving their money for Otakon, haven't gotten back to me or just plain can't make it due to prior obligations.
This doesn't mean I'm writing off the con, but I really don't want to foot the entire hotel bill (if I can avoid it) and spend the entire weekend in downtown Charlotte by myself. I have commissions to work on that will keep me occupied after the con closes down each day, so I won't have a lack of things to do in the evening.
But it will be more fun if I have people to hang out with. If I get 3 other roommates, it's just $70 / person at the Charlotte Hilton right across the street from the convention center.

- I only have two weeks to complete it for Hero's Con. It's doable, but I'm not going to bust my ass on it.
- I have two commissions, one due for Otakon. I may want to get started on those!
- My Baroness is unable to make it and I don't believe anyone else is going to be doing GI Joe at Hero's Con.
- Rainbow Brite has been requested by a potential roommate and it's already done!

10:54 pm - [ConCarolinas] Con Report and Piccies! Stats:
Pic Count: 41 FAILs bagged: 2 Times Silk Spectre II recognized: 1 Times Rorschach recognized: A lot more Times Rule #5 invoked: 5 Times Rule #34 mentioned: 1 Times I drooled over Graverobber from Repo!: 4
I have to say that this year's ConCarolinas was much better than last year's. Part of it was rooming with Tohma, one of my roommates from NashiCon and all-around awesome person. The other was the con's emphasis on keeping things family friendly to avoid incurring the wrath of parents and hotel staff due to barely dressed girls performing softcore porn in the hallways and wannabe fetish models strutting around on the stage. (While I find the nude form to be quite beautiful, there is a time and place for everything.)
My day started on Friday afternoon, when I got up around noon. I packed up, threw everything in the car and called Tohma to let her know I was on my way. After a brief stop for lunch, I arrived at the hotel and kept Tohma company while giving myself a stress test to see if I could stand being in the Bondage-card base for any length of time. (I can, as long as the air-conditioning is decent.) After eating, I decided to put on Silk Spectre II and changed in the bathroom. I wandered around, checking on Tohma periodically to give my feet a break from the heels.
I attempted one panel, which was Costuming 101, to get ideas for a panel I'm doing in September. But I could only listen to the panel administrator wax poetic about Star Trek uniforms for so long before I fell asleep, so I waited for Tohma to close up shop before we went to check in to the hotel. There, she changed into Rorschach and we went back to the con. We wandered around looking awesome. While a grand total of one person recognized my costume, Tohma's was recognized multiple times. And she looked just like Rorschach. After a small shoot-let, we finished up the night with a viewing of Repo! the Genetic Opera (my third in the past week) and retired to the hotel to rest.
The next morning, I drove Tohma back to the convention so she could get free brekkie and set up her booth and came back to sleep a little more. Once I had rested, I got brekkie for myself and Harleyed up. None of the panels looked very interesting so I had cycles of wandering around, chatting with friends and watching Tohma's booth while she took care of things. I also had to steadily replenish my supply of business cards because they kept getting depleted from the free stuff table.
Around 4 pm, I came back to the hotel to have a meal, rest a bit and get out of the Harley makeup. Once I was scrubbed, fed and rested, I put on Rainbow Brite and grabbed my leftover candy from AZ. Rainbow was once again a huge hit. I got five picture requests as I walked back in the door. (And got to finally meet Kelly de Light, one of Peyton's friends and all-around Cool Person.) Several people wanted pictures with me, including a huge group of grown men that looked like they belonged in a rap video rather than a sci-fi con. I also had one of the Klingon ladies ask to take a picture with me, which was a fun dichotomy. Tohma also got a lot of picture requests while she used me as a beacon / guide to help see where she was going.
What tickled me most was a couple of girls at the Purgatory table shaking the candy bags like a rattle and bouncing up and down like excited puppies because they got Star Sprinkles from Rainbow Brite.
Finally, Tohma and I sat down in one of the rooms to await line-up for the costume contest. We both landed in the "advanced" categories, but were confident about our chances. My confidence sagged a bit as I saw the competition we had, but I rallied up, skipped to the stage and impressed the crowd with my little girl voice as I yelled at Murky and Lurky to stop ruining the con. As the awards were called, I found that I earned 3rd place! I felt bad that Tohma didn't get anything for Rorschach, but she's won so many awards that she didn't need the validation. However, I believe we both got the biggest crowd reaction.
After the contest let out, we decided to head back to the hotel after a quick late-night McD's food run. Tomorrow, we pack up, say our goodbyes and head home.
All in all, a definite improvement over last year. However, (and I hate to say this), I'm not sure that I'll come back next year. It's not the con itself, but the timing. Being a week after Animazement and catering to an entirely different fanbase kind of hurts my impression of the con. When I'm still riding that high AZ gives me, it's very hard to psyche up for a con that sees less than a fifth of the attendance and is only a few days later. Most of these people I'll see at StellarCon or MonsterCon (or both) anyway.
Also, not having any panels I was really interested in, along with lots of downtime, hurts my interest. (Though keeping Tohma company in the dealer's room and trading con stories helped with the downtime immensely.) Perhaps I'll return next year if I have the right company or they fluke like they did at StellarCon and get a celebrity I want to meet, like Vic Mignogna.
Until next time, kids. Current Mood: exhausted

03:55 pm - [Librari-Con] I've been asked to do a panel! Katharine Rankin, the director of the Cumberland County library and organizer for Librari-Con, has asked me to do a panel on costuming!
I've never done a panel before and I'm not exactly sure what I should talk about, aside from aiming it at a younger crowd that's just starting cosplay. So, my solution is taking it to the people!
So, tell me, kids: What kind of things would you like this panel to cover? I'll have 45 minutes to fill, so I'll have 25 minutes for presentation and about 20 for Q & A.
What do you want to know about? Supplies needed? Budgeting? Good vs. bad fabric? Why satin is De Debil? Presenting your cosplays? How to shop for a sewing machine? Places to go for supplies? Critiques? Why 4chan is the cesspool of the Internet? Current Mood: excited

07:51 am - [Animazement] Great Con... Or Greatest Con? Photo Count: 226 FAILs Bagged: 9 Ls Counted: 24 Times Oboro Recognized: 1 Times Rainbow Brite Recognized: Over 9,000~! Con Virgins in My Group: 3 Random Roomie Picked Up: 1
Swag:
Naraku fan art Alucard fan art Rainbow Brite fan art Chibi Alucard, Integra, Walter and Seras fanart keychains Set of Legendary Sannin plushies Volumes 1 - 3 of Gothic Sports Sword of Omens from Thundercats
Once again, arigatou gozaiamasu to the staff, guests and sponsors for putting on yet another great con. Animazement is, bar none, my favorite con of the "tour" and it did not disappoint.
This con was a series of firsts all around. First year at a new venue. First time that a family member (my brother, Jeff) was introduced to this part of my world. First time Joe and Lindsey did not room with me. First time (since meeting them) that Sam & Co. were (largely) absent from my con experience. First time I entered the craftmanship contest and hit Closing Ceremonies.
So we'll just start from the top and I'll run down the good, bad and ugly as I come across them. Pardon the mid-review rants, which is the ugly, but I feel them necessary. I've added warnings for sensitive readers. Or beacons if you like reading the Bitch Kitty rants.
The con itself ran into multiple issues before it even got started. Most of the Japanese guests had to cancel due to the swine flu scare and the possibility of a ten-day quarantine upon return to Japan. So the schedule had to be changed three times in a week to accomodate the guests they managed to get as replacements and to resolve logistical issues. The staff posted a last minute shedule for download on the site, which I promptly printed off and marked up.
Jeff arrived at the house Thursday night, roughly the same time that the Irvines and several friends arrived. Pizza and Smash Brothers punctuated the night, with me taking breaks to finish last minute con stuff. Essentially we were having our own pre-con. After fun was had, the Irvines left and we all went to bed.
Because Jeff and I were the only ones in our group not going to pre-con (which I unfortunately didn't know until it was too late to extend my reservation to Thursday), I got up and ready earlier than usual so I could check in and allow my roommates time to get in, settled and ready for the con. That proved to be an exercise in futility, as the hotel was booked solid and had no rooms ready. No biggie, as Jeff and I went to the convention center to grab badges.
The registration could have been handled a bit better, because it seemed to take forever for the staff to get started. However, once we got moving (and I had volunteered my Voice Projection Powers), it was pretty quick. We took the time to get an idea of the layout of the convention center and then went to check in. At that time, they only had kings available and the ETA for the double I was promised was 4 pm. Since I did not want to wait that long or make my roommates do so, I said "Screw it. Give me a king."
That headache out of the way, Jeff and I did the arduous task of lugging crap up to the room. We had dinner at McDonald's and I spent half our meal hugging old friends, which prompted Jeff's observation that "I know everybody". Due to my Internet presence and shameless self-promotion, I do! After our tummies were filled, we changed into our costumes (Integra for me and Ryu for him) and headed down for some hardcore conning!
After more confirmation about my knowing everyone, I noticed that Jeff was looking bored and encouraged him to strike out on his own to explore and make his own con memories. While he did so, I caught up with friends and sweated myself 5 pounds lighter in my wool suit as I made good on a promise to HP Mike to take pictures for him during the Guilty Gear shoot. Partially as a "thank you" and partially out of his awesomeness (since he knew that Sam & Co. weren't coming to the con, which kinda bummed me), he surprised me by telling me that he was participating in the Hellsing shoot as Dark Walter for me. He also acted as a bodyguard of sorts, since a few of my more stalkerish fans were in attendance and I'm too nice to tell them to bugger off.
After Guilty Gear let out, Mike and I decided to wander around the dealer's room for a bit while chatting. I made my first purchase of my coveted Orochimaru plushie. Friday is usually my "stake out" day as far as the dealer's room is concerned, but I knew that elusive and rare plushie would sell out, so I jumped on it and used it as my binky each night in the hotel.
I went back to the room to drop off my plushie and meet up with Kat, who gave me a present her mom made for me: A painting of Integra. It was so pretty that one of the first things I did when I arrived home was put it on the wall beside my scroll.
As I waited for my fellow Hellsing cosplayers to congregate in the lobby, I popped outside to the Bleach shoot to get a picture of Lindsey as Rangiku and Piper in her OVA character (name escapes me at the moment).
At 5 pm, we started our shoot. It was a lot of familiar faces and a few new ones to the fandom. All the cosplays looked fantastic and it was great to see that one of my favorite anime series still gets the love it deserves. I found out right before the shoot that Sam & Co. had made it to the con after all, but they never made it to the shoot, despite it lasting a little over an hour. During the shoot, Peyton, Shanks and Charley came by to greet me and praise my Integra before running off to check in.
After dispersing, we hung out and talked some more before heat exhaustion sent me trudging back to my hotel room to wipe down, eat and get into my flagship costume for the con: Rainbow Brite.
This was codenamed "Project Wisp" (Wisp is her name before she becomes Rainbow Brite) and was intended as a "surprise cosplay" for congoers. The surprise, however, was all mine! I had no idea how immensely popular the costume would be! I was stopped every five feet for hugs, fangirling and picture requests. I had filled up my Kuro Neko bag with small bags containing Neon Stars candy (kind of like Sprees, but shaped like stars) and a business card. I gave them to people that recognized the costume and darn near ran out of my stock alloted for the day. Some people ate the candy, but just as many decided treasure it as a souvenir because Rainbow Brite gave them Star Sprinkles!
I checked out Artist Alley and bought a cute "grown-up" Rainbow Brite print, making sure to carry it around for a bit while saying, "I'm gonna look like this when I grow up!" I finally gave up to rest a bit in the room and shower the con funk off me. After taking a bit of half-nap, I felt refreshed enough to put on Oboro and deliver on one of two of my promised drafts. Unfortunately, I had underestimated the toll wearing a wool suit and a costume with quilted sleeves and a compression vest on the same hot day would take on me. I was in no shape to host a draft, which was painfully obvious halfway through the draft as I was struggling to stay awake and focus. To my credit, I drafted a fairly decent Jund deck with Ajani kicker and trounced both my opponents.
At 3 am, I packed up the Magic and went to the room. After stripping down, my friends talking kept me awake, so I amused myself by taking a couple pictures of my new Orochimaru plushie molesting my Rainbow Brite doll (which I brought along with me for lulz). Finally, we all fell asleep.
At 8:30 am on Saturday, I woke up and went out with Kat to eat brekkie at McDonald's. After eating, we scarpered off to our own locations. She to the dealer's room to volunteer and I to my private photoshoot with Chiki. Unfortunately, it didn't happen at the appointed time because Chiki had something come up at the last minute, so I stayed in the lobby to pose for pictures as Rainbow Brite and encourage people to cheer for the cute side in Cosplay Chess.
After using my Voice Projection Powers to aid in crowd control, I was assigned as a queen for the cute side, which is befitting the ruler of Rainbowland and cheered on my fellow pieces in our quest to defeat the creepy side. However, the most powerful cute piece on the board didn't do much. The mob was thirsty for blood and started chanting "kill the queen" before I had a chance to move. The creepy chessmaster decided to obey the mob and had Madusa (zip-chan) kill Rainbow Brite. While a little upset that I didn't get to use my Star Sprinkle Grenades and Rainbow Rope, I carried out my plan to cry like a little girl for getting "picked on". Apparently, I was scripted to do a lot more than just stand there looking cute and then dying, but the chessmasters decided to deviate from the script to give the mob what they wanted. That was probably a poor decision because the crowd then started to chant about who they wanted taken out next.
I attempted to salvage things somewhat by jumping back on the board periodically to do stuff, like protecting my king when he was in check and being threatened and bestowing my Rainbow Powers on Hunny-Senpai when he reached the end of the board. In between, those bursts, zip-chan continued to stay in character and tortured me with her arrow and snake while I whine in my little girl voice about Madusa picking on me. I came back at the end along with the cute people to kill Envy (friend Eric) at the end to earn our victory.
Once again, I had an awesome time being a part of the panel and appreciate all of cosplay chess's hard work in putting it together. While getting ready to graduate college, no less! It amazes me how it gets more popular every year and how electrified the crowd gets. I will definitely take part again next year!

After Cosplay Chess, I called up Peyton to check his status and went to hang out with him, Shanks and Charley for a while. There, I got my shoot with Chiki, since she had a few spare moments. Then we wandered the dealer's room, where I picked up the Sword of Omens. Eventually, heat exhaustion and painful armor sent the guys running back to their rooms. I decided that I had enough of Rainbow Brite, so I stripped down, bathed off the con funk, ate, charged my phone and camera and took a little power-nap in my underwear to fully enjoy the air conditioning. While I waited on the guys, I showed Jeff a pro move by having him help me lug some stuff to the car so we didn't have to scramble to pack up and clear out in the morning.
Eventually, the guys came by with their Guilty Gear stuff to change in my room while I put Oboro back on. (I love it because it spreads the love of Basilisk and it's a great "chill" costume.) We spun out the rest of the night wandering around and getting stopped every few feet for pictures. HP Mike ended up joining us and I volunteered to take more pictures for him. Since no one recognized the costume (Basilisk is the best anime no one watched, IMNSHO), it was easy to stand off to the side and snap pictures.
However, I did get to pose for a few pictures because several people liked my kimono, though they didn't know the character. After we had enough of wandering, we chilled outside of the rave area and chatted. In the middle of taking pictures, a girl approached me and praised my costume, stating that she loves Basilisk. I was elated that someone recognized the costume. (Interestingly enough, I used mostly the Oboro business cards because I had them handy in Hobbs and the cards I left on the free stuff table was steadily being depleted. Which could mean that I'm about to get a lot of commission requests!)
Eventually, I had enough of cosplay and ran back to the room to change into my rave clothes. I came back to hang out some more until the guys decided they had enough as well and changed back to street clothes. HP Mike broke the eating rule, so I had him raid my stash and relax while I helped Peyton out of his Testament costume. Mike fell asleep, so I just let him crash for a bit while I went back out to the rave area to do my traditional FAIL Hunt and tell Mike's roommates where he was so they wouldn't worry. I also apologized to my friends for deciding to forgo the second draft I promised, due to wanting to hang out with the guys and people being assholes about the draft. Speaking of said assholes...
( More Rantage. )
My FAIL Hunt was largely unsuccessful, so I decided to call it a night, stripped down, and fell asleep relatively quickly.
I woke up again at 8:30 am on Sunday for the last day of the con. I took advantage of my wakefulness to shove more stuff in the car. Peyton called to check in and I informed him that I was getting ready for the craftmanship contest. Due to the completely positive response I got from the congoers, I decided to take the plunge and enter Rainbow Brite. My brother was going to hang out in the room for a while, so he let them in while I was occupied with the contest.
Xav, in his awesomeness, allowed me to jump ahead in the queue so I'd have time to check out and help Peyton, Shanks and Charley get into their Naruto costumes. The judges completely fangirled about the costume and didn't even need the reference picture I provided. They loved that I had a package of Star Sprinkles for each of them. They couldn't get up fast enough when I gave them the go-ahead to paw at the costume and hug their "doll". (Their words!) Funnily enough, they did the first thing that every little boy does with dolls and flipped up my skirt to look at my bloomers. I left the contest with a great feeling.
Unfortunately, it turned out that my hurry was all for naught, aside from being able to check out on time. The guys forgot half their Naruto gear at home, so they were just going to chill for the day. It was disappointing because we were going to do something awesomely cracktastic, borne out of Peyton stating that he wanted to put a Curse Mark on Rainbow Brite, when I told him my cosplay plans. I was going to paint half my face and the exposed part of a leg to make it look like the Curse Mark was taking over and have Peyton drag me around and order me to kill people. I had brought Tsunade for them, but my reluctance to wear the Death Heels and paint my nailes and the fact that they had a Tsunade had me packing it away and going with the Cursed Rainbow Brite.
Jeff and I wandered and hung out with HP Mike for a bit as we had nachos for breakfast. After Mike decided to scarper off, we spun out the next couple of hours in the dealer's room, where I picked up the other two Sannin plushies and three volumes of Gothic Sports. Jeff was disappointed that he didn't get to see any voice actors, since he didn't know about the panels, but we were able to meet Kyle Hebert outside of the dealer's room and get some autographs from him, which made Jeff's con. I got hugged from behind by Charley, who was in his awesome Asuma costume and thanked me for letting him crash in my room for the night. We said goodbye to the guys one more time and ran back to the room so I could de-Rainbow and finish loading up the car.
We returned to the con to peruse Artist's Alley, where I picked up the rest of my fan art and chatted with a few people there. We spun out the rest of the con by watching AMVs, which went right into Closing Ceremonies. I had never gone to the Closing Ceremonies, but that was where the craftmanship awards were being given and Jeff was the only one depending on me for a ride. We had fun cheering and being silly and the awards were handed out. While I was thrilled that I had made an impression on the judges, I didn't think I would win anything because my competition was very stiff.
So I was completely floored that I was awarded "Judges' Choice"! Along with my certificate, I earned a L cell phone charm and a Ryuk mini-briefcase for my hard work and nostalgia trip. I got hugs from friends sitting with me and rode the high through the rest of Closing Ceremonies and on the ride home. I helped Jeff get his stuff in the truck and hugged him bye before moving stuff into the house and stowing my swag.
All in all, Animazement continued with its awesomeness and I am so happy to have the priviledge of attending each year. I look forward to watching it grow and mature in the near future. Thanks to the staff and guest for putting on a great show. And thanks to my roommates for keeping the drama out of the room and making the chill out time extra fun.
A few notes before I wrap up:
Staff: While I know and understand the motivation for turning off the escalators (people's costumes getting caught), I'm not alone in asking that you turn them on next year. Several people with leg and knee problems had severe problems getting around due to the escalators being turned off and having to wait for one of the slow-as-molasses elevators to free up so they didn't have to take the stairs and aggravate those problems. I also felt sorry for those in wheelchairs and with strollers, who had to contend with the con-goers who were just lazy and didn't want to use stairs. Turning them on would make things go much more smoothly.
Roomates: I have someone's pants! It's a pair of rather nice black 34 x 34 slacks. Jeff and I found them while doing a final check before clearing out. If you're missing some pants, let me know and I will get them back to you.
Until next time, kids! Get some rest! Current Mood: happy
